Get More From Your Nintendo Via Moonshell For r4i

Gaming Consoles like Nintendo DSi, 3DS, have always had a lot of processing power. This is because they required churning out impressive graphics & immersive sound with no hiccups. Your portable handheld gaming system should not pause or stall during active gameplay. A smooth gameplay is achieved by a powerful processor or graphics that is able to process a lot of information within a very short span of time. Similarly, the sound chip can decipher accurately between the individual channels of sound for perfect stereoscopic effect. Additionally, both the chips have to work in exact synchronization to ensure both the audio & video are in perfect sync.

However, despite the impressive hardware, the Nintendo does not intend its users to do anything beyond playing legally bought games & some proprietary multimedia. Hence makers of carte r4 cartes strive to extend the usability of your Nintendo gaming system. In fact using these cards, you can play many videos, read text files, enjoys songs & even operate some homebrew software.

Though the hardware on the cards is absolutely must to run third-party software, you still require interface software that will allow you to load songs & videos. While the Nintendo’s hardware is more than capable of playing the multimedia content, the ability is unlocked by software like Moonshell. In the last article we saw what Moonshell can do. In this article we will see how Moonshell, paired with r4i or r4 gold cartridges can do.
The beauty of Moonshell is that it does not alter any files on Nintendo. Hence the warranty of your gaming system remains intact. All the software is loaded on to a Micro SD card which the r4i carte for 3DS or r4 for DS XL. Now lets see how to make use of Moonshell

What is Moonshell For r4i Nintendo?

Nothing beats playing games on Nintendo. Over the years with improved hardware revisions the overall experience on a Nintendo has simply went up constantly. In fact the company has introduced several industry firsts with the Nintendo DS & the 3DS. The screens have become better, the ergonomics are just fantastic.
Sure there are a ton of games & so many of the features that can keep you engrossed for hours. Coupled with a great battery life, the Nintendo is perhaps one of the best handheld gaming devices. Some companies have even co me up with attachments that offer an extra joystick & an additional battery that boosts the gameplay to almost double than original.

However, some companies have gone much beyond enhancing battery backup & extra joysticks. As you know Nintendo still relies on game cartridges. This proprietary piece of hardware stores all the game files. Companies are coming with cards like the r4 & r4i. These tiny cards hold the power to unlock the vast potential the hardware that is Nintendo DSi XL& 3DS.

Though these cards are one of the greatest invention for extending the functionality of the Nintendo handheld gaming system, what is equally important is the third-party software or sometimes called custom firmware or ROM that is used to run more than just games sold by Nintendo. Though there are many such custom software that help you get more out of your Nintendo, very few can match up to the ease & functionality of Moonshell.

Working from a simple Flash-Card like the r4 & r4i, Moonshell is homebrew software for all the major Nintendo's Handheld gaming devices - Nintendo DS, Lite & DSi. Additionally, for people who worry about voiding warranty by using such software need not worry too. Moonshell does not alter the hardware & does not modify the internal Nintendo’s software which is protected by intellectual property rights of the company.

Moonshell is one of the most versatile software that let you enjoy your handheld Nintendo by inserting a simple cartridge or simply known as carte.  With Moonshell running on your Nintendo 3DS XL or DSi XL, your gaming system will be able to play songs & movies. You can use it to show your photos. Your Nintendo can even work as an e-book reader as it supports text files & comic books too. However, many use it to run homebrew applications like the one with Guitar sounds. Though you can play downloaded games, it is not legally permitted.

While the installation is very easy & simple, it can only be done via a carte that supports Micro SD cards as storage medium. Hence cards like r4, r4i, r4i 3ds xl,  r4 Gold are much in demand. Once you get your authentic flash cartes, running Moonshell is pretty easy. In the next article we will see more about Moonshell & it’s latest version. However, we will also show you how to use it to play videos & songs.

Why Do Cards Exists: R4i, R4 3ds xl

Cartridges or Cards as they are now commonly known were the sole means of playing legally bought games on Nintendo DS, DS Lite, XL, etc. Most of the gaming consoles have always relied on some form of removable media to sell games. Since internet was not wide-spread & the speed was dismal, game console developing companies found the physical media distribution as the easiest & safest mode of game distribution. However, such media posed a grave risk, that of physical media failure. In case the card or the CD became unusable, the games on the cards too would become unplayable. To circumvent the same, the courts had allowed taking backups of games in soft form or ROM image of the game. However, the courts have mandated that the soft copy can only made from the Card bought legally. In other words owners of card are the one who can own the soft copy of the game.

Herein was the grey area of ROM distribution. Many games were successfully ‘Ripped’ & saved as ROM. Later on they found their way in the internet & were available for download by anyone. Now card manufactures like that of R4i, Gold, etc saw a great opportunity to offer cards that could play games from these soft copies. However, the major purpose of such cards existed to extend the functionality of the console. If Nintendo had its way, one would only be able to play games on cartridges bought legally. With R4 cards, one can easily store the Game in the form of a ROM. A ROM is the game data or game file in soft form.  A ROM can be as small as a few Kilobytes (KB) to a few Megabytes (MB). Without these cards it would have been mandatory for gamers to play games from Cartridges only. What happens when these cartridges are damaged or lost? If the cartridge becomes unusable or inaccessible isn’t our money lost?  A game cartridge is a mere hardware unit which is bound to fail or malfunction. One has paid money for the intangible asset, which is the game. One cannot be disallowed to play the game just because the hardware on which it came malfunctioned. This grey area in the law has been long exploited by pirates of software to keep ‘soft’ copies of games on had-disks in the form of ISOs or ROMs.

Another added function that cards like R4i or R4 Gold cards can enable is running of homebrew. Homebrew is a very interesting concept. These are basically softwares or codes written by non-Nintendo employees. Often such softwares are games, apps & other utilities. By utilities we mean apps that extend the functionality of the Nintendo Gaming console beyond intended.
Over the course of the articles we will explore various things that can be done using the carts.

Let’s begin with CycloDS

CycloDS range of cards may be known as multiple names like CycloDS Evolution, CycloDS Revolution, all offer the same functionality for the Nintendo DS & Nintendo DS Lite. Released by Team Cyclops CycloDS iEvolution is the first released Flash Kit offering support for the enhanced DSi-Mode. This mode is unique in the sense that it offers ability to run ROMs and Homebrew at 2x the CPU speed of DS-Mode due to its ability to access 16MB of RAM. We will discuss the DS-Mode & DSi Mode in subsequent articles, but let’s just focus on the card right now.

This card is supposedly ‘legal’ to buy since it is shipped without a ‘Bootloader’. Since bootloader is the official copyright of Nintendo, one cannot ship the card with one pre-loaded. However, a simple search on the net will reveal many bootloader locations. However, the product does contain a compiler. Once user gets hold of the necessary Nintendo DS region dependent ROMs, he / she can use PC compatible tools to build a proper flash able bootloader file.

The beauty of this card lies in the usage of the unique DSi Mode which allows the use of enhanced RAM (16MB), dual cameras of the Nintendo. Some other benefits are as follows:

1. Ability to use themes (skinnable)
2. Simple to use File manager with bookmarks.
3. Advance Cheat engine for in-game gains
4. A very high (near 100%) compatibility with games, even problems games like Mario Kart DS
5. A real time game save functions which enables stop & resume feature, from exactly where one has left it.
6. A unique Battery-saving algorithm to extend the play time    of Nintendo DS
7. Setting to alter brightness while in the game itself
8. Ability to soft-reset to exit game & Return to iEvolution Menu.
9. Inclusion of Moon shell  for extended media playability.
10.Support for older generation exploits like Pass Me for generation 1 or Slot-2 Cards
11.Supports rumble & expansion packs.
12.Micro SD Card support for both FAT16 & FAT32 formatted cards.
13.WiFi access in games like Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
14.Even supports higher capacity Micro SDHC cards 916 or 32 GB?
15.Inclusion of multiple languages for true universal playability.

With all these feature, this European development has won the hearts of many Nintendo fans. However, the R4i & Gold cards can easily match many of the features. In fact the R4i cards do have some aces up their sleeves which can easily rival the popularity of the CycloDS Cards. Which we will see over the course of our next articles.

Different Types Of Cards Gen - 2

The Nintendo Gaming system primarily the DS series was popular owing to its intuitive & ergonomic design, it lineage. However, owing to the fact that its functionality could be extended far beyond what Nintendo wanted, caused the gaming system to scale new peaks of acceptance.
To enable functions that Nintendo did not want like playing backup games, Homebrew applications etc, madders looked at the extension cards or cartridges. In the earlier article we observed some of the earlier Generation 1 cards that fit into the older SLOT-2 of the Nintendo DS.
Even though such older generation cards are not in use anymore owing to Nintendo discontinuing the use of SLOT-2 from DSi & DSi XL, it was important for readers to understand the nomenclature in order to avoid being duped.

The earlier generation cards used a two pronged approach commonly known as two-tool combination wherein the GBA Cartridge or SLOT-2 served as storage media & a Booting Tool built in to the cartridge that was put in the modern SLOT-1.
However, newer or second generation cards do not have to resort to such techniques & manufacturers have been able to cram both the boot ROM & space for SD Cards all into the single cartridge.
SLOT-1 devices include DSTT, DSi Player, R4DS (commonly known as the Gold Card), etc.
Nintendo had carefully encrypted their SLOT-1 to prevent access to homebrew & anything other than original & licensed content. However, enterprising individuals managed to break the SLOT-1 encryption & cards were designed that could boot and read directly from SLOT-1.
What this meant was flashing firmware became a risk that could be avoided & all-in-one cards began coming in the market.
Let’s look at some of the 2nd Gen Cards:
Acekard 2:
One of the most popular 2nd Gen cards that boasted a 99% game compatibility, skin able interface, download-play support, micro SD/SDHC memory card support, very swift loading, and Action-Replay cheat support etc.
Additionally this card has a Closed-Source firmware called AKAIO (currently v1.8.9). This card was the first to support the newer DSi. When Nintendo released firmware 1.4.1, the team released compatibility patch.  The next iteration Acekard 2i can even be used on a 3DS in DS Mode.
Acekard RPG:
The Acekard R.P.G. is the only device on the market to feature both NAND memory, and a Micro-SD slot up to 32GB. Furthermore it also has a mini-USB to connect to PC to access its 1GB onboard memory. With open source architecture, custom loaders are widely available.  The most acknowledged feature is compatibility EZ Flash V 3 in 1 expansion pack, which enables the Acekard R.P.G. to utilize the internal PSRAM for the Nintendo DS Browser & the Rumble function in games.
Action Replay DSi:
This card is fully updateable via internet using a PC app. It too has 99% homebrew capability. However, backup ROMs only work with Lame Boy and nes-DS. Additionally a SAVE function enables sharing of saved games via the World Wide Web.
Since Second generation cards have a few more iterations we will continue the same in our next article.

Basic Nintendo Layout

Nintendo has always had a special place in the hearts of youngsters & adults alike for their gaming hardware. Until quite recently Nintendo still was one of the highest selling handheld gaming platforms.

In this article we will see some of the basic hardware specifications of the gaming console. Since many are quite familiar with the Ninetendo DS, we will not go into depth for the older models but stick to the newer ones only. Nintendo DS was released in 2004 & its lite version was released two years later. The original DS nicknamed ‘DS Phat’ did not have the brighter screens, was a bit chunkier & slightly heavy too. The later version DS Lite was a little faster & had clearer & brighter screens. Further down the line Nintendo released a revamped version DSi which had a mightier processor & higher amount of RAM.

A little over two years ago Nintendo released DSi XL. This one had a larger 4.2” Screen. Apart from the screen size the DSi & DSi XL share many similarities. They both have Front & Rear Cameras which the DS lite does not have. Both possess external expansion slots in the form of a SD card slot. Most importantly both have much better battery capacity with the DSi clocking about 8-10 hours & DSi XL at 10-12 hours of gameplay at average brightness.

All the Nintendo DSs have had a Gameboy Advance (GBA) slot. This slot is commonly referred to as SLOT-2 on a Gameboy. However since DSi Lite, this slot has been removed from the hardware. Why was this slot important?

These slots used to hold cartridges that were legacy & supported older games. However, homebrew developers used these cards to extend the functionality of the gaming console. Any gaming console has content developed by the content providers. Such cards are non-re-programmable. They are also known as Flashcards. Since Nintendo introduced another slot, these older GBA cards came to be known as 1st Gen cards & the newer cards that fit into the newer slot called DS Game Card Slot came to be known as SLOT-2 cards.

It is imperative that one first understands the terminology of the cards. Though Nintendo intends that you use only approved cards, there were many varieties of cards available that got more than what was officially permitted.

First generation cards included GBA flash cartridges, GBAMP CF, SuperCard, and M3. These were, needless to say older & of poor configuration. Additionally firmware updates from Nintendo regularly blocked out access to such cards. However, the final blow to the older generation cards came when Nintendo simply stopped adding GBA or SLOT-1 to the newer generation Nintendo DSi & DSi XL.

In the subsequent articles we will see what these cards are & how you can extend the functionality of your Nintendo DSi & DSi XL.
