Let’s begin with CycloDS

CycloDS range of cards may be known as multiple names like CycloDS Evolution, CycloDS Revolution, all offer the same functionality for the Nintendo DS & Nintendo DS Lite. Released by Team Cyclops CycloDS iEvolution is the first released Flash Kit offering support for the enhanced DSi-Mode. This mode is unique in the sense that it offers ability to run ROMs and Homebrew at 2x the CPU speed of DS-Mode due to its ability to access 16MB of RAM. We will discuss the DS-Mode & DSi Mode in subsequent articles, but let’s just focus on the card right now.

This card is supposedly ‘legal’ to buy since it is shipped without a ‘Bootloader’. Since bootloader is the official copyright of Nintendo, one cannot ship the card with one pre-loaded. However, a simple search on the net will reveal many bootloader locations. However, the product does contain a compiler. Once user gets hold of the necessary Nintendo DS region dependent ROMs, he / she can use PC compatible tools to build a proper flash able bootloader file.

The beauty of this card lies in the usage of the unique DSi Mode which allows the use of enhanced RAM (16MB), dual cameras of the Nintendo. Some other benefits are as follows:

1. Ability to use themes (skinnable)
2. Simple to use File manager with bookmarks.
3. Advance Cheat engine for in-game gains
4. A very high (near 100%) compatibility with games, even problems games like Mario Kart DS
5. A real time game save functions which enables stop & resume feature, from exactly where one has left it.
6. A unique Battery-saving algorithm to extend the play time    of Nintendo DS
7. Setting to alter brightness while in the game itself
8. Ability to soft-reset to exit game & Return to iEvolution Menu.
9. Inclusion of Moon shell  for extended media playability.
10.Support for older generation exploits like Pass Me for generation 1 or Slot-2 Cards
11.Supports rumble & expansion packs.
12.Micro SD Card support for both FAT16 & FAT32 formatted cards.
13.WiFi access in games like Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
14.Even supports higher capacity Micro SDHC cards 916 or 32 GB?
15.Inclusion of multiple languages for true universal playability.

With all these feature, this European development has won the hearts of many Nintendo fans. However, the R4i & Gold cards can easily match many of the features. In fact the R4i cards do have some aces up their sleeves which can easily rival the popularity of the CycloDS Cards. Which we will see over the course of our next articles.

Different Types Of Cards Gen - 2

The Nintendo Gaming system primarily the DS series was popular owing to its intuitive & ergonomic design, it lineage. However, owing to the fact that its functionality could be extended far beyond what Nintendo wanted, caused the gaming system to scale new peaks of acceptance.
To enable functions that Nintendo did not want like playing backup games, Homebrew applications etc, madders looked at the extension cards or cartridges. In the earlier article we observed some of the earlier Generation 1 cards that fit into the older SLOT-2 of the Nintendo DS.
Even though such older generation cards are not in use anymore owing to Nintendo discontinuing the use of SLOT-2 from DSi & DSi XL, it was important for readers to understand the nomenclature in order to avoid being duped.

The earlier generation cards used a two pronged approach commonly known as two-tool combination wherein the GBA Cartridge or SLOT-2 served as storage media & a Booting Tool built in to the cartridge that was put in the modern SLOT-1.
However, newer or second generation cards do not have to resort to such techniques & manufacturers have been able to cram both the boot ROM & space for SD Cards all into the single cartridge.
SLOT-1 devices include DSTT, DSi Player, R4DS (commonly known as the Gold Card), etc.
Nintendo had carefully encrypted their SLOT-1 to prevent access to homebrew & anything other than original & licensed content. However, enterprising individuals managed to break the SLOT-1 encryption & cards were designed that could boot and read directly from SLOT-1.
What this meant was flashing firmware became a risk that could be avoided & all-in-one cards began coming in the market.
Let’s look at some of the 2nd Gen Cards:
Acekard 2:
One of the most popular 2nd Gen cards that boasted a 99% game compatibility, skin able interface, download-play support, micro SD/SDHC memory card support, very swift loading, and Action-Replay cheat support etc.
Additionally this card has a Closed-Source firmware called AKAIO (currently v1.8.9). This card was the first to support the newer DSi. When Nintendo released firmware 1.4.1, the team released compatibility patch.  The next iteration Acekard 2i can even be used on a 3DS in DS Mode.
Acekard RPG:
The Acekard R.P.G. is the only device on the market to feature both NAND memory, and a Micro-SD slot up to 32GB. Furthermore it also has a mini-USB to connect to PC to access its 1GB onboard memory. With open source architecture, custom loaders are widely available.  The most acknowledged feature is compatibility EZ Flash V 3 in 1 expansion pack, which enables the Acekard R.P.G. to utilize the internal PSRAM for the Nintendo DS Browser & the Rumble function in games.
Action Replay DSi:
This card is fully updateable via internet using a PC app. It too has 99% homebrew capability. However, backup ROMs only work with Lame Boy and nes-DS. Additionally a SAVE function enables sharing of saved games via the World Wide Web.
Since Second generation cards have a few more iterations we will continue the same in our next article.

Basic Nintendo Layout

Nintendo has always had a special place in the hearts of youngsters & adults alike for their gaming hardware. Until quite recently Nintendo still was one of the highest selling handheld gaming platforms.

In this article we will see some of the basic hardware specifications of the gaming console. Since many are quite familiar with the Ninetendo DS, we will not go into depth for the older models but stick to the newer ones only. Nintendo DS was released in 2004 & its lite version was released two years later. The original DS nicknamed ‘DS Phat’ did not have the brighter screens, was a bit chunkier & slightly heavy too. The later version DS Lite was a little faster & had clearer & brighter screens. Further down the line Nintendo released a revamped version DSi which had a mightier processor & higher amount of RAM.

A little over two years ago Nintendo released DSi XL. This one had a larger 4.2” Screen. Apart from the screen size the DSi & DSi XL share many similarities. They both have Front & Rear Cameras which the DS lite does not have. Both possess external expansion slots in the form of a SD card slot. Most importantly both have much better battery capacity with the DSi clocking about 8-10 hours & DSi XL at 10-12 hours of gameplay at average brightness.

All the Nintendo DSs have had a Gameboy Advance (GBA) slot. This slot is commonly referred to as SLOT-2 on a Gameboy. However since DSi Lite, this slot has been removed from the hardware. Why was this slot important?

These slots used to hold cartridges that were legacy & supported older games. However, homebrew developers used these cards to extend the functionality of the gaming console. Any gaming console has content developed by the content providers. Such cards are non-re-programmable. They are also known as Flashcards. Since Nintendo introduced another slot, these older GBA cards came to be known as 1st Gen cards & the newer cards that fit into the newer slot called DS Game Card Slot came to be known as SLOT-2 cards.

It is imperative that one first understands the terminology of the cards. Though Nintendo intends that you use only approved cards, there were many varieties of cards available that got more than what was officially permitted.

First generation cards included GBA flash cartridges, GBAMP CF, SuperCard, and M3. These were, needless to say older & of poor configuration. Additionally firmware updates from Nintendo regularly blocked out access to such cards. However, the final blow to the older generation cards came when Nintendo simply stopped adding GBA or SLOT-1 to the newer generation Nintendo DSi & DSi XL.

In the subsequent articles we will see what these cards are & how you can extend the functionality of your Nintendo DSi & DSi XL.
